According to the web archive, on January 5, 2022, Dying Light 2 held the lead, but on the 9th, Elden Ring took first place. Before that, zombie action in the open world was in the lead for the entire year 2021. It is also worth considering that the Elden Ring page on Steam only appeared in August 2021, while Dying Light 2 has had it since June 2019. So, it seems like Dying Light has a serious competitor now!
