Assassin’s Creed Shadows Prepares to Send Players on a “Spookier” Post-Game Adventure

Think you'll see all feudal Japan has to offer in Assassin’s Creed Shadows? Think again. Ubisoft is unleashing Claws of Awaji, a new DLC expansion promising a distinctly darker, more unsettling experience than the base game. Prepare to trade serene landscapes for chilling shadows, and familiar foes for cunning adversaries who mirror your every move.

Beyond the "Definite Ending"

Creative director Jonathan Dumont confirms that Claws of Awaji takes place after the main campaign’s conclusion. Protagonists Naoe and Yasuke return, but this time, they’re venturing to the titular island of Awaji, a location described as having a “different vibe, a bit spookier.” Their mission: recover a lost treasure while navigating a web of traps and ambushes laid by deadly new enemies. Forget predictable bandit encounters. The Sanzoku Ippa, Claws of Awaji’s primary antagonists, are a different breed. Associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois hints at their unsettling tactics, describing them as employing methods “not too dissimilar to the players’." Expect a nerve-wracking game of cat-and-mouse, where stealth, infiltration, and assassination take on a new dimension of psychological warfare. While Assassin’s Creed Shadows offered a sprawling open world, Claws of Awaji focuses on a smaller, more tightly designed environment. This shift, coupled with a projected playtime of around ten hours (compared to the main game’s 30-40), suggests a more concentrated, narrative-driven experience. A welcome respite for those who felt overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the base game.

More Than Just an Epilogue

Despite Shadows having a conclusive ending, Dumont emphasizes that Claws of Awaji adds meaningful layers to the existing lore and character development. It’s a testament to the idea that even in a world seemingly fully explored, there are always more stories to uncover, more shadows to delve into. Claws of Awaji isn’t just more Shadows; it's a tonal shift, a chilling descent into a darker corner of feudal Japan. It showcases Ubisoft’s willingness to experiment within the Assassin’s Creed formula, offering a unique blend of stealth-action and psychological thriller.
