Guardians of the Galaxy Disappointed Square Enix

Square Enix has published the contents of the briefing, which took place on February 4 after the report for the three quarters of the current fiscal year. Despite the fact that the sales of "Guardians of the Galaxy" in the first weeks did not meet the expectations of the publisher, however, with the advent of discounts, the project began to gain momentum. In the end, the organization called the circulation of the game satisfactory.

It is possible that extremely positive feedback from the players also influenced sales. Many gamers before the release did not even pay attention to the project due to the meager advertising campaign and the reputation of the "Avengers" from the same publisher. However, after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, it immediately became one of the best superhero games in history.

Despite the releases of Outriders, NieR Replicant, and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, net sales were lower than a year earlier for the same period as Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel's Avengers. Against this background, the MMO segment grew again thanks to the performance of Final Fantasy XIV and the successful sales of the add-on for it.

Square Enix noted that reviews for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy were good, but the game's initial sales still fell short of the company's expectations. However, thanks to discounts, they began to grow, and the game may well compensate for its slow start. The report doesn't mention this, but player feedback has likely contributed to the increase in sales. Prior to release, Eidos was viewed with skepticism amid the failure of Marvel's Avengers, though the developers spoke of their differences. After the release, the situation changed, and user reviews, for example, on Steam came out "extremely positive". The PlayStation 5 version has a user score of 8.7 out of 10 and a press score of 80 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic. On other platforms, the title also did not receive less than 80 points from game journalists.

The studio hopes to achieve the targets in the future, because thanks to discounts and promotions, gamers continue to be interested in the title and buy it. According to Yosuke Matsuda, their plans to promote the game are still in place and have already resulted in compensating for the poor start. The president hopes that sales will increase in the future.

Square Enix has yet to announce a potential sequel. Probably, if the total circulation reaches the expected figures, the publisher will still approve the production of the sequel.
