The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Gives Veterans a Reason to Relearn Geralt

Returning to The Witcher 3 after more than a decade should be easy. Most veteran players already know how Geralt fights, which Signs solve which problems and exactly how quickly an urgent monster investigation can be abandoned when someone produces a Gwent deck.

Songs of the Past wants to make that familiarity less comfortable. The 2027 expansion sends Geralt and Dandelion to a completely new region, but more importantly, it gives experienced players new combat tools and enemies that could force them to rethink habits developed hundreds of hours ago.

Geralt Finally Gets a Silver Chain

The most interesting addition is also one of the oldest ideas associated with the character. Geralt can now fight with a silver chain, a weapon with roots in Witcher lore and a particularly memorable connection to CD Projekt Red's own history.

The opening cinematic of the original 2007 game recreated Geralt's fight with a striga, including his use of a silver chain. Songs of the Past turns that old reference into an actual gameplay mechanic.

The trailer shows Geralt using the chain to control an opponent and pull it toward him. That gives the weapon a purpose beyond simply offering another way to deal damage. It can manipulate positioning and potentially help manage groups, adding a new option to a combat system players have been using since 2015.

New Monsters Mean New Problems

Giving Geralt another tool makes more sense when there are unfamiliar creatures waiting for him. Songs of the Past introduces new monsters alongside additional mutations, expanding both sides of the familiar preparation-and-hunt formula.

That combination is more interesting than simply increasing enemy health. The Witcher works best when identifying a creature and choosing the right response matters, and completely new enemies can temporarily remove the advantage veteran players have accumulated over years of play.

The expansion can make an experienced Witcher 3 player feel like a monster hunter again rather than someone who already knows exactly which oil, bomb and Sign to select before the fight begins.

This Time, Dandelion Takes Geralt Home

The story has an equally good excuse to leave familiar territory. Geralt travels with Dandelion to Letten, the bard's homeland, where an apparently peaceful situation develops into another job for a witcher. That makes Dandelion more than Geralt's entertaining companion for the journey. Visiting his homeland gives CDPR an opportunity to dig into a character players have known for years without knowing nearly as much about his past.

It also provides a natural reason to build a new region rather than reopening another corner of Velen. New settlements, characters and local problems can give Songs of the Past its own identity while keeping two familiar faces at the center.

And Yes, Geralt Can Still Waste Time Playing Cards

Not everything needs to change. More Gwent has already been confirmed, which may be the most reassuring sign that CDPR understands what returning to The Witcher 3 is supposed to feel like.

Songs of the Past isn't replacing the slower distractions that made the original world enjoyable to inhabit. There will still be people to meet, places to explore and apparently enough time for card games while something horrible terrorizes the countryside. The difference is that Geralt now has unfamiliar monsters to study and a silver chain to figure out when he eventually remembers the emergency.

Songs of the Past Isn't Just Another Victory Lap

CD Projekt Red could have made Geralt's return entirely about nostalgia. Another beautiful region, familiar characters and a few quests probably would have been enough to bring millions of players back.

Songs of the Past has a better opportunity. By giving Geralt new tools and unfamiliar enemies, it can make returning players learn something again. After hundreds of hours spent mastering The Witcher 3, being a beginner at even one part of monster hunting might be exactly what Geralt's return needs.
