Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 Wants to Make Xenomorphs Scary Again

The original Aliens: Fireteam Elite had an unusual problem. Xenomorphs are supposed to be some of science fiction's most terrifying creatures, but it's difficult to remain afraid of something after you've killed several hundred of them with an automatic rifle.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 still gives its Marines plenty of firepower, so Cold Iron Studios isn't trying to turn the sequel into another Alien: Isolation. Instead, the developers are making the Xenomorphs more dangerous through variety, mobility and attacks designed to break a squad's formation.

Not Every Xenomorph Attacks the Same Way

The latest footage confirms the return of familiar threats including Drones and Facehuggers. More importantly, different types of Xenomorphs are designed to create different problems instead of simply adding more bodies to a swarm.

Drones can take advantage of their mobility and approach from walls and ceilings, making it harder to concentrate entirely on the corridor ahead. Facehuggers create a completely different kind of pressure. They're small, fast and capable of turning one overlooked threat into an immediate problem for the entire team.

That variety becomes particularly important when several enemy types appear together. A large target can demand most of the squad's firepower while smaller creatures close the distance, forcing players to constantly decide which threat deserves their attention first.

The Xenomorphs Want to Break Your Formation

Fireteam Elite 2 remains a cooperative third-person shooter, and the new enemy design seems built around making teamwork more important. Three Marines firing at the same doorway can handle a lot of Xenomorphs. The situation changes quickly when enemies start approaching from several directions.

Positioning therefore becomes part of surviving a swarm. Players need to watch flanks, cover teammates and react when a creature manages to get close. Focusing too heavily on one dangerous enemy can leave another side of the formation exposed.

It's an appropriate way to recreate the tension of Aliens. The Marines aren't helpless, but their weapons only give them an advantage while the squad remains organized.

More Firepower Comes With More Problems

Cold Iron Studios is also expanding the Marines' combat options. Players have access to different weapons, abilities and equipment that allow them to specialize within the fireteam and prepare for particular situations.

That doesn't mean every encounter can be solved by bringing a larger gun. Different enemies require different responses, especially when the battlefield becomes crowded. A loadout suited to eliminating large targets may need support from someone better equipped to control groups of smaller creatures.

Early previews suggest that the basic third-person shooting remains familiar to anyone who played the original. The bigger change comes from how the expanded enemy roster interacts with those existing systems.

Fireteam Elite Doesn't Need to Become a Horror Game

Making Xenomorphs frightening in a shooter will always be difficult. Once three Marines arrive with rifles, explosives and specialized equipment, a single creature can't create the same kind of fear it does when you're hiding from it in a ventilation shaft.

Fireteam Elite 2 seems to understand that distinction. It doesn't need to make one Xenomorph unstoppable. It needs to make an entire swarm unpredictable enough that even heavily armed players can lose control of the situation.

The Marines still have the guns. The Xenomorphs just have more ways to make those guns feel insufficient.
