Who is Yasuke, the Protagonist of Assassin's Creed Shadows?

In the upcoming "Assassin's Creed Shadows," Ubisoft introduces Yasuke, Japan’s first Black Samurai, as one of the lead characters. Renowned for its blend of historical authenticity with narrative innovation, Ubisoft’s choice of Yasuke—a figure shrouded in mystery with his debated origins and intriguing legacy—promises a compelling addition to the Assassin’s Creed universe.

Defining Yasuke's Samurai Status

Despite historical discrepancies about his origins and path to Japan, Yasuke's status as a Samurai under Oda Nobunaga is a celebrated aspect of his legacy. After capturing Nobunaga's interest due to his physical presence and demeanor, Yasuke rose to a position not typically afforded to foreigners, cementing his status in the elite ranks of Nobunaga’s retinue. Ubisoft's portrayal will explore these nuanced layers, offering players a glimpse into the complexities of Sengoku-era Japan.

A Modern Resurrection of the Legend

Yasuke has inspired a variety of cultural portrayals, from Netflix’s anime to appearances in video games like Nioh. With "Assassin’s Creed Shadows" set for release on November 15, this new game is anticipated to dive deeper into Yasuke's story, especially focusing on the lesser-known aspects of his life post-Nobunaga. Ubisoft's storytelling prowess is expected to enrich the legend of Yasuke, bringing a fresh perspective to his historical and cultural significance.
