Witcher Fans Shocked by Geralt's True Age in New Book

The Witcher, known for his silver hair, gravelly voice, and world-weariness, isn't quite as ancient as many fans imagined. Rozdroże kruków (Crossroads of Ravens), the ninth book in the Witcher saga, dropped a bombshell: Geralt of Rivia, during the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is a mere 61 years old. Yes, you read that right. Sixty-one.

The internet exploded. Fans, who'd envisioned Geralt as anywhere between a seasoned quinquagenarian and a centuries-old immortal, flocked to forums, their minds blown. The White Wolf, known for his superhuman feats and battle-hardened demeanor, suddenly seemed… surprisingly young. Reddit threads lit up like a Witcher's Igni sign. "I always pictured him pushing at least his 80s," commented u/iwenyani, echoing the sentiment of many. Others pointed to Vesemir's dialogue in The Witcher 3, hinting at Witchers' extended lifespans, fueling the belief that Geralt was closer to a century old. The revelation that Yennefer, his sorceress lover, is significantly older than him added another layer of bewilderment to the mix.

Passing the Torch: Ciri Takes Center Stage

Geralt's confirmed age adds another layer of understanding to CD Projekt Red's decision to make Ciri the protagonist of the upcoming The Witcher 4. Story director Tomasz Marchewka confirmed Ciri's central role, emphasizing her complex character and untapped narrative potential. This shift feels natural. While 61 might be young for a Witcher, decades of monster slaying and navigating treacherous political landscapes take their toll. A potential time jump in the next game would place Geralt in his 70s, a more fitting age for a wise mentor than a front-line fighter. The White Wolf may be hanging up his silver swords, but his legacy will undoubtedly shape Ciri's journey.

A New Saga Begins: The Future of the Witcher Universe

Crossroads of Ravens not only reveals Geralt's age but also provides deeper insights into his character and backstory. This, coupled with Ciri's ascension as the new protagonist, marks a pivotal moment for the franchise. While Geralt’s tale might be winding down, the Witcher universe is far from finished. Imagine a grizzled, wisdom-filled Geralt, his legendary exploits now tavern tales, guiding Ciri as she confronts her own destiny. The possibilities are endless, and the future of the Witcher franchise, under Ciri's leadership, promises to be as captivating and unpredictable as Geralt's own long and storied life—all 61 years of it.
