Rockstar has finally opened a free upgrade path for GTA V owners on PS4 and eligible Xbox One versions. After years of debate around the paid current-gen release, the move addresses one of the most common complaints surrounding the game.
When the expanded and enhanced version launched in 2022, there was no free upgrade path. Players who wanted better visuals, improved performance, and access to newer GTA Online features had to buy the game again. Unsurprisingly, that sparked plenty of criticism. By that point, GTA V had already been re-released multiple times, and many fans felt they were being asked to pay for the same game all over again.
Viewed on its own, a free upgrade isn't particularly unusual. What makes this announcement noteworthy is how late it arrives.
Rockstar spent years treating the current-gen edition as a premium upgrade, despite ongoing criticism from players. Now, with GTA 6 set to take center stage later this year, the company has quietly abandoned that approach. Whether that's a response to community feedback or part of a larger strategy, the result is the same: one less barrier between players and the newest version of GTA V.
The current-gen version isn't just GTA V running on newer hardware. Alongside sharper visuals and smoother performance, players get faster loading times, longer draw distances, and access to GTA Online features that were never added to the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
Rockstar is also making the transition painless. Story Mode saves and GTA Online progress can be carried over, meaning players won't have to leave behind years of characters, properties, businesses, and unlocks just to move to a newer version of the game.
For many players, this is the outcome they've been waiting for since 2022. The free upgrade removes one of the longest-running frustrations surrounding GTA V's current-gen release and finally gives existing owners access to the newer version without an extra purchase.
At the same time, the timing works perfectly for Rockstar. With GTA 6 set to arrive later this year, bringing more players onto current-generation consoles is an obvious advantage. Whether this was done to satisfy fans or to prepare for the next chapter of the franchise is open to debate, but the result is the same — one of GTA V's longest-running complaints has finally been addressed.
