Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet takes inspiration from… Elden Ring?

The Game Awards reveal of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet initially pointed towards another signature Naughty Dog experience: a linear, cinematic narrative adventure. However, whispers circulating through the gaming community suggest a far more ambitious undertaking, one inspired by the open-world freedom of Elden Ring. Could this be the game that reshapes Naughty Dog's design philosophy?

A Galaxy Far, Far Away From Linearity?

Former Game Informer journalist Ben Hanson previously hinted that Naughty Dog's upcoming project took cues from a game renowned for its player freedom. Speculation immediately gravitated towards Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild. In a recent MinnMax discussion, Hanson all but confirmed these suspicions, reflecting on the potential backlash had he explicitly compared The Heretic Prophet to Elden Ring before its reveal. While the trailer showcases a vastly different tone and aesthetic, the comparison isn’t about mimicking Soulslike combat. It’s about embracing player agency and environmental storytelling. It’s about trusting players to forge their own path through the narrative, rather than being led by the hand through cutscenes and dialogue. Fueling this speculation further is a past interview with Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann. Speaking in 2023, Druckmann expressed a growing fascination with FromSoftware's less conventional narrative approach, specifically citing Elden Ring’s ability to convey story through gameplay and environmental details. The timing of this interview strongly suggests that these very principles are being woven into the fabric of The Heretic Prophet. Imagine a Naughty Dog game where the story unfolds not through exposition, but through exploration and discovery, through the silent whispers of a meticulously crafted world.

From Cinematic Storytelling to Cosmic Sandbox?

Naughty Dog has experimented with open-world elements before, most notably in the Jak series and the Seattle section of The Last of Us Part II. However, these forays always maintained a strong focus on linear narrative progression. The Heretic Prophet could mark a dramatic departure, a bold leap into a truly player-driven experience. This represents a significant gamble for a studio known for its meticulously crafted, cinematic narratives. But the potential rewards are immense. Imagine the rich tapestry of a Naughty Dog universe combined with the subtle, environmental storytelling of FromSoftware. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has the potential to be a groundbreaking hybrid, a game that redefines not only Naughty Dog's identity but also the very nature of interactive storytelling. The future of narrative, it seems, lies among the stars.
